Yes, I was not a talented actress, but I enjoyed being around my fellow actors and actresses who were very good. I found my strength was in writing, in creating stories, plot, dialogue. Here is where my strength is, and so i began to sell my stories to tv and then when i moved to film, i began directing my stories
1) En tu niñez fuiste actriz , pero de adolescente te decantas por escribir guiones .Preferías contar tus propias historias antes de interpretar las de otros ?
Sí, yo no fui una actriz con talento, pero me gustó estar cerca de mis compañeros actores y actrices que eran muy buenos. Encontré mi fuerza en la escritura, en la creación de historias, la trama, el diálogo. Aquí es donde reside mi fuerza, y así empecé a vender mis historias para televisión y luego, cuando me pase al cine , empecé a dirigir mis historias
2) The fact of being also an actress , makes your work as a director easier to take out the best of your actors ?
Yes, because i was once an actress (i stopped 25 years ago) , I feel I am a far more sensitive writer and director. I love collaborating with performers and drawing out the strongest performance from them.
2) El hecho de haber sido actriz , te facilita tu labor de directora a la hora de sacarles el máximo partido a los actores ?
Sí, porque yo fui actriz (labor que dejé hace 25 años), pero siento que soy una escritora y directora mucho más sensible . Me encanta colaborar con artistas y sacarles la mejor interpretación posible de ellos mismos.
3) "A way of life " your opera prima, made you win 4 awards including a BAFTA , you have started very strong in the world of directing films ?
Yes in fact, with A Way of Life, we won 17 international awards, including, the BAFTA for my writing and directing.

4) Winning the BAFTA as writer and director changed your life or do you think that it has changed more after filming BELLE ?
Life is a little more different. More people know my name now and I have shown my ability to be versatile and to make a larger scale movie. But creatively, nothing has changed. My process of writing and directing is the same. My challenges to connect my audiences to my characters and my stories are the same. Having a person I never met use her union to claim every word of my writing as her own, for the movie BELLE, and seize my writing credit as her own, has allowed me to see that my writing is powerful and valuable - otherwise no single person and their union would have fought so hard to claim my writing. From this experience, i have grown.
4) Ganar el BAFTA cambió tu vida de directora o crees que ha cambiado más a raíz de rodar BELLE ?
La vida es diferente. Más gente sabe mi nombre y ahora he demostrado mi capacidad de ser versátil y hacer una película a mayor escala. Pero de manera creativa, nada ha cambiado. Mi proceso de escritura y dirección es la misma. Mis retos para conectar mi público a mis personajes y mis historias son las mismas. Después que una persona que nunca conocí uso un sindicato para reclamar cada palabra de mi obra BELLE como suya propia y apoderarse de mi crédito como escritora , me ha permitido ver que mi obra es buena y valiosa - de lo contrario esta persona y su sindicato no habrían luchado tan duro por reclamar mi obra. De esta experiencia, he crecido y aprendido .

5) The story of Dido Elisabeth Belle is wonderful , How did it came into your hands?

En 2009 mis productores me enviaron una postal de la pintura y me preguntaron si estaría interesada en escribir y dirigir una historia acerca de las chicas de la pintura. Yo estaba más interesado en la chica bi-racial, Dido y quería escribir una historia sobre ella , así que fui contratada oficialmente para escribir la película y escribí 18 borradores del guión ,pasaron algunos años, hasta que fueron capaces de recaudar dinero para la producción de la película.
6) Belle is a cocktail of many different subjects , it seems dificult to combine them but you've done a great job , was it difficult ?
This is why it took me 18 drafts to write. It wasn't difficult, it just took focus and a lot of time. Directing it was fine because I knew the story I had created so well, after the focus I had spent in writing it.
Esa es la razón que me llevó a escribir 18 borradores . No fue difícil, sólo costo encontrar el enfoque correcto y una gran cantidad de tiempo. Dirigirla estuvo bien , fue divertido , porque sabía que la historia que había creado con tanto esfuerzo era buena .
7) The art direction in BELLE is sublime , you had to do a great job of reserach , didn´t you ?

Sí, pero yo contaba con un maravilloso diseñador de producción, Simon Bowles, quien interpreto la belleza que quería y las necesidades de la historia que deseaba contar, fantásticamente. Su trabajo es realmente sublime. Me encanta colaborar con gente de gran talento y perfeccionistas - que hacen mi trabajo más satisfactorio.
8) It is really impressive the careful attention that you put into each scene , scenes of sublime beauty . It must have been exhausting shoot ?
Not too exhausting. It was thrilling - satisfying. I had carried my vision in my head for so long and now it was coming to the big screen. I had always planned a big, complex, beautiful, intelligent film. I'm glad that it has been received with such love. With incredible actors and filmmaking crew, we were able to put a lot of love into the movie.
8) Es de agradecer la cuidada atención que pones en cada escena ,creando escenas de una gran belleza . Debió ser un rodaje agotador para ti ?
No fue demasiado agotador. Fue emocionante - satisfactorio. Yo tenía mi visión clara en la cabeza durante tanto tiempo y ahora solo tenia que llevarla a la pantalla grande. Yo siempre había planeado una película grande, compleja, hermosa, inteligente. Me alegro ver que ha sido recibido con tanto amor. Con increíbles actores y el equipo de rodaje , hemos sido capaces de poner un montón de amor en la película.
I wrote it in the script. - i wanted a simple but visual way to transition the girls into teenagers. Sometimes, time seems to fly in the blink of an eye. I wanted a sense that the girls had grown up, loving each other, playing in the garden, with happiness and laughter from the moment they met. Running behind the tree and emerging as teens was the perfect way to communicate all of this.
9) Hay muchas escenas fascinantes pero una me enamoró , ves a unas niñas jugando en el jardín , pasan por detrás de un árbol y aparecen jugando pero en edad ya adolescentes. como se te ocurrió esta idea ?
Lo escribí en el guión. - Yo quería una manera simple pero visual para realizar la transición de niñas a adolescentes. A veces, el tiempo parece volar en un abrir y cerrar de ojos. Quería dar la sensación que las chicas habían crecido, amándose, jugando en el jardín, con la felicidad y la risa desde el momento en que se conocieron. Correr detrás del árbol y emerger en la adolescencia era la manera perfecta para comunicar todo esto.
10 ) Dido is a brave woman , determined to break the roules of english society SXVIII , Do you expect her to be an example of improvement for today´s youth, to fight for what they believe ?
Yes, but not just youth, but adults too. We should all be prepared to fight for truth, for what is morally right. There will be those who will try to fight against truth and morality using 'tradition'. They will attempt to keep what is wrong in our society by saying 'this is our tradition - we have been doing xx and xx for 200 years so we cannot stop or change this now!' Absolute nonsense! This was the argument of evil bigots to keep slavery. Change only happens when the brave fight for truth. This is the message of BELLE
10) Dido es una mujer valiente decidida a romper moldes en la sociedad inglesa del S XVIII , esperas que sea un ejemplo de superación para la juventud actual , para que luchen por lo que creen ?
Sí, pero no sólo los jóvenes, sino también para los adultos. Todos debemos estar preparados para luchar por la verdad, por lo que es moralmente correcto. Habrá los que tratarán de luchar contra la verdad y la moral mediante la "tradición". Ellos tratarán de mantener lo que está mal en nuestra sociedad diciendo 'esta es nuestra tradición - que hemos estado haciendo xx y xx durante 200 años así que no podemos detener o cambiar esto ahora' Una absoluta tontería! Este fue el argumento de los fanáticos del mal para mantener la esclavitud. El cambio sólo ocurre cuando los valientes luchan por la verdad. Este es el mensaje de BELLE
11 ) I see similarities between Dido and Amma Asante , Dido is the only black woman belonging to English high society of SXVIII while you are the only black woman director . Do you feel there is any parallelism between the character and you ?

9) There are many fascinating scenes but i fell in love with one , " a little girl is playing in the garden and suddenly behind a trees she apears playing as a teenagers " . How was this idea born ?

Of course, i indeed created BELLE to be very similar to me in her personality. I am no longer the only black woman director in the UK, we have the talented Debbie Tucker Green and Destiny Ekaragha. But yes, I am one of a very very few UK black females who have had movies released. I experience something of the complications that Dido experiences in my film, indeed - cultural, gender, racial, political, in a modern day context - more subtle but most definitely still relevant. It is true, my story and character of Belle carries a lot of myself, and this is why i dedicated the movie to my father, who raised me to be who I am today.

12 ) The work of Tom Wilkinson and Gugu Mbatha Raw stands out over others , What is easier , to work with a star actor or to work with young actor ?
I think you work differently with each. Both are a joy to work with. I think the work of Gugu and Tom stands out because for their characters, their relationship is also a love story a father/daughter paternal love story. My father was a very great man, and I wanted to recreate the relationship that I had with him, between Tom and Gugu's characters. I think probably this is what you feel with their work in the film - my wish to ensure that a father's love for his daughter, and her love for him, can be pure, important, and beautiful. It can also be challenging. Tom and Gugu honor their character's stories with exceptional performances.
12) El trabajo de Tom Wilkinson y de Gugu Mbatha-Raw destacan sobre los demás, Que es más fácil trabajar con actores consagrados o con actores en proyección ?
Creo que se trabaja de manera diferente con cada uno. Ambos son una alegría para trabajar. It was a very special day. It was wonderful to share it with Gugu. I felt very proud and very honored. I felt my film perhaps had a stronger chance of making a difference now that it had been acknowledged by the UN or ONU, as you say. I will never forget it
13) Te llenaría de orgullo haber proyectado BELLE en la sede de laONU ? Seguro fue un día muy especial para ti ?
Fue un día muy especial. Fue maravilloso compartirlo con Gugu. Me sentí muy orgullosa y muy honrada. Sentí mi película BELLE tuvo la gran oportunidad de marcar diferencias ahora que había sido reconocido por la UN o de la ONU, como usted dice. Nunca lo olvidaré
14) With BELLE you have left the bar very high and your next film will have high expectations . Do you feel the pressure ?
14) Con BELLE has dejado el listón muy alto y tu próximo film será muy esperado .Sientes esa presión ?
Sí, siento una gran presión. Pero confío en mi visión y mi perspectiva como directora. Trato de dejar la presión a un lado, para que esta no mate la creatividad.
15) Your third film will be for warner bros , could you tell us something about this project ?
Yes it's a double female lead - a thriller. It's a study of female identity. It will be the first film I will direct that I have not written. The wonderful writer is Christina Hodson and I'm excited to be directing her work. She is super talented .

Yes, i feel great pressure. But I trust in my vision and my perspective as a director. I try to put the pressure to one side, as pressure kills creativity.
